Mantis was created from one belief — that technology should work in harmony with human biology, not against it.

Light is more than illumination. It is one of nature’s most powerful biological signals — shaping sleep, focus, mood and recovery.

Why “Mantis”

Named after nature’s most extraordinary eye

Nature has spent millions of years perfecting vision. Among the most extraordinary visual systems ever discovered belongs to a marine creature only a few inches long — the mantis shrimp.

Unlike humans, who have three primary photoreceptors for colour, the mantis shrimp possesses up to 12–16 specialised photoreceptors — detecting ultraviolet light, polarised light, subtle wavelength variations, motion, depth and contrast. Each eye moves independently, creating extraordinary visual awareness.

It evolved in shallow marine ecosystems where blue wavelengths penetrate deeper than most other visible light. Over millions of years, marine organisms developed highly specialised visual systems adapted to blue-spectrum environments.

The Philosophy

Technology evolved rapidly.

Modern humans now live in environments dominated by digital screens, artificial lighting, prolonged visual exposure and continuous technological interaction. Technology evolved rapidly. Human biology did not.

Inspired by the visual intelligence of the mantis shrimp, MANTIS explores the relationship between light, vision, circadian rhythm, visual comfort, cognitive performance and modern digital living.

Every Mantis product is designed with the understanding that vision influences not only the eyes, but also sleep, focus, recovery, mood, nervous-system balance and overall human performance.

Natural light

For thousands of years, humans lived under full-spectrum natural sunlight. The visual system evolved in balance with daylight and darkness.

Artificial environments

Fluorescent and later LED lighting produced stronger short-wavelength blue emissions. Indoor lifestyles increased dramatically.

The digital revolution

Computers, smartphones and displays transformed visual behaviour — close-range screens, under artificial light, late into the night.

Circadian biology

Science revealed retinal cells sensitive to 460–480 nm that communicate directly with the brain’s biological clock, regulating melatonin and sleep.

Human-centered optics

The future: biologically adaptive, circadian-aware, profession-specific lenses. This is where Mantis begins.
