Sunlight vs digital device light

Blue light itself is not the problem. The way humans are exposed to artificial digital light is the real issue.

Natural sunlight contains a full, balanced and continuous spectrum of visible light. Blue light exists naturally alongside green, yellow, orange, red, infrared and ultraviolet wavelengths. Sunlight changes dynamically throughout the day — and humans evolved under these natural cycles for millions of years.

Digital device light is different

Digital devices produce artificial light using LEDs and display systems that create narrow spectral peaks, especially within the blue wavelength range. Unlike sunlight, digital light is incomplete, concentrated and constant.

Why digital blue light affects humans differently

The issue is not simply blue light itself, but the way humans interact with digital environments. Digital exposure is close-range, prolonged, repetitive, and often during nighttime.

  • Close-range viewing
  • Prolonged duration
  • Repetitive exposure
  • Often during nighttime

This may contribute to visual fatigue, glare sensitivity, circadian disruption, reduced sleep quality and nervous system overstimulation.

The role of 460–480 nm

Specialised retinal cells are highly sensitive to wavelengths around 460–480 nm. These cells help regulate melatonin production, circadian rhythm, alertness and biological timing. Nighttime exposure to concentrated digital blue light in this range may interfere with the body's natural recovery cycle.

The goal of modern vision technology is not eliminating blue light completely, but creating healthier interaction between technology and human biology through intelligent spectral management.
